We took a couple of hours out of the day to walk down to the local market.
produce (including lots of types of potatoes),
and butchers.
One butcher had the entire carcass of some type of small animal, probably a lamb or goat, split end to end and spread out for display. At least some of the internal organs had been removed. Couldn't quite bring ourselves to take a picture of it.
The lower level had a supermarket and may fish markets.
Then it was on to the opera house. We had driven by it a number of times as we went out on tours and decided it warranted an up close look.
They had a nice open air restaurant there so we had lunch overlooking the ocean. It was a lovely day.
The opera house is right on the coast and on the rocks just below people had painted many pictures of various composers and musical entertainers. They ranged from Mozart, Brahms and Liszt to Placido Domingo to Frank Sinatra to Brittney Spears. Quite a range.
Behind the opera house we also found the Castillo de San Juan (Castle of St John the Baptist), also called the Black Castle for obvious reasons. It was built in the mid 1600's and was one of the island's main fortifications.
We've seen this rather large "sign" in several places throughout the Canaries as well as in Madrid. Seems they really want to you pick up after your dog.
When walking around the park yesterday we commented on the band shell in the middle. Paul said that someone had mentioned that there are occasional concerts held in there. Well tonight we were able to listen to a brass ensemble playing in the park. It was sort of a special way to end our trip in the Canaries. Tomorrow we fly out to Morocco.
